Visit the main Inca sites around Cusco on the City Tour, like Sacsayhuaman and Koricancha. Also experience the Pisac Market and the Inca town of Ollantaytambo on the Sacred Valley tour. Top it all off with the Lares trek to Machu Picchu, a great alternative to the Inca Trail!
The Lares Trek departs daily with our agency, although the dry season (April through October) is definitely a better time of the year to travel.
When you arrive in Cusco, we’ll pick you up from the airport or bus station and bring you to your hotel. There you can rest or walk around Cusco acclimatizing to the altitude. Overnight in hotel.
On our second day, we’ll take a City Tour of Cusco. We’ll take about 5 hours to see some of the most interesting places left behind by the Incas. We’ll start our tour by visiting Koricancha/Santo Domingo Monastery. Koricancha, according to historians, was one of the main temples used by the Incas to worship the Sun God. They believe it was covered in gold and had many statues made of gold inside, but the Spanish conquistadors looted the temple and destroyed most of it. However, there is a large part still intact on which the Santo Domingo Monastery was built. After seeing Koricancha we’ll drive a short while outside of Cusco to visit Sacsayhuaman. Sacsayhuaman was used as a fortress during the rebellion against the Spanish, but when the Incas were driven out of the area, the Spanish tried to destroy it. Although it isn’t in its original state, it is still very impressive with architecture using some blocks that weigh more than 100 tons! After visiting Sacsayhuaman, we’ll go to Quenqo which is another Inca site which means ‘labyrinth.’ Historians think this site was used for ceremonial purposes. This is also the beginning of the famous Inti Raymi festival.
PucaPucara was likely used as one of the many control points made throughout the Inca Empire, more specifically the controlled entry point for those wanting to enter the city of Cusco. From here we’ll go to Tambomachay which is located outside of the city of Cusco and is believed to be a temple dedicated to the worship of water. Experts think it was an important ceremonial place of worship because of the detail of the stonework. Overnight in hotel.
Today we’ll visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas on a tour which should last about 10 hours, taking up the whole day. One of our stops will be in Pisac where we’ll visit the Pisac Archaeological Park and Pisac Market. At the Pisac Market you’ll be able to shop for souvenirs, and see the artisans trying to sell their jewelry, handicrafts, textiles, and more. You can also sit on one of the balconies of the many cafes and people watch from above the market. From Pisac we’ll travel to Urubamba for our buffet lunch. After filling up on our lunch we’ll go on to Ollantaytambo which experts believe to have been a fortress pointing to its strategic location, strong walls and guard posts. There are many remnants of Inca architecture in town which you’ll see as you tour Ollantaytambo. From Ollantaytambo you’ll continue the Sacred Valley Tour by heading out to Chinchero which is also called ‘Rainbow City’ and has a great view of the area around it. The people living there still hold on to traditions generations old. People also come to see their church with its painted murals and traditional market. From Chinchero, we’ll return to Cusco around 7:00pm. Overnight in hotel.
On day 4 of your trip, we’ll start the Lares trek to Machu Picchu! At around 5:00am we’ll pick everyone up from their respective hotels and drive 45 minutes outside of Cusco to the small town of Calca. Calca will be a sort of supply stop to give you a chance to buy some last minute things to bring on your Lares trek like water and snacks. If you missed breakfast before you were picked up you can eat something quickly here. After stopping in Calca we’ll drive to the Lares Hot Springs so we can relax a few hours before we start hiking for the next few days! After our time in the hot springs and lunch we’ll start our trek by leaving Lares and hike to Wakahuasi. Wakahuasi is about 6 hours away and will be our camp for the night. We’ll arrive before dinner giving us time to get situated in our tents and relax a little and during dinner we’ll have time to get to know the other people in our group.
We’ll have breakfast at around 6:30am after our morning wakeup tea. Today we’ll continue our Lares trek to Machu Picchu by leaving Yanahuara and hiking down to the local road which should take about 40 minutes. From here we’ll take local transportation to Ollantaytambo where we’ll take a train to Aguas Calientes. When we arrive in Ollantaytambo, it will depend on what time your train leaves on how much time you’ll be able to stay there. If you have enough time you can roam around the town and even visit the ruins which will require a ticket to enter. According to your schedule you’ll take your train to Aguas Calientes. The train ride takes about an hour and 40 minutes. Once you’re in Aguas Calientes you’ll go to the hotel and put away your things before going to dinner. You may also have time to visit the hot springs (entrance fee of $4) today! Tonight you’ll be able to take a hot shower and sleep in a real bed after hiking for a few days on the Lares trek!
We’ll have another hot cup of coca tea to wake us up in the morning before our breakfast which will be around 6:30am. We’ll leave Yanahuara after breakfast and hike down to the local road which will take only about 40 minutes. From here we’ll take local transportation to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo, depending on your predetermined train schedule, you may have time to have lunch and roam around Ollantaytambo before taking your train to Aguas Calientes. You can also visit the Ollantaytambo ruins but you will need to buy a ticket to enter. According to your train ticket scheduled, you’ll board the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes. The trip to Aguas Calientes usually takes an hour and 40 minutes. In Aguas Calientes you’ll have dinner and stay in a hotel, giving you a chance to shower and sleep in a real bed after your Lares trek for a few days!
We’ll begin our last day of our Lares trek with an early breakfast at our hotel before heading out to Machu Picchu. To hike up to Machu Picchu you’ll follow a trail which goes back and forth up the mountain. Make sure to bring your passport and ISIC (International Student Identity Card) if you booked your trip with a student discount. You’ll have a 2 hour guided tour of the main areas of Machu Picchu and afterwards you’ll have time to roam the Lost City on your own.
You also have the option of climbing Huayna Picchu Mountain which will give you a great view over the city of Machu Picchu. It should take about 45 minutes to climb, but remember there are two entrance times which the Machu Picchu officials enforce very strictly. Also remember that Huayna Picchu only has a limited number of entrances daily (400 people per day) and they sell out quickly. You will need to book your tickets well in advance!
After you’ve soaked up the enigmatic atmosphere and taken your pictures of Machu Picchu, you can take a bus down to Aguas Calientes. From Aguas Calientes you’ll take the 6:30pm train to Ollantaytambo where we’ll pick you up and drive you back to Cusco.
Note: The time table for the trains may change according to the train company’s availability. There will also be changes to your itinerary and price if you decide to change your departure time, or upgrade to the Vistadome Train. If you booked later than most of your group for your Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu, you may not be in the same train as the rest of your group. Overnight in hotel.
Today we’ll pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the airport or bus terminal according to your schedule. This will be the end of our services.
