This Lares and Inca Trail adventure will take you through a route with archaeological remains from the Incas, the Inca Trail, give you a glimpse of the local people of Lares, some of the most beautiful landscapes of Peru before arriving to “the Lost City of the Incas:” Machu Picchu.
The Lares Trek and Classic Inca Trail departs every day from March to January. We recommend going on this trek from April to October, because of the dry season. The Inca Trail has a strict limit on how many people there can be on the road (500). 300 of them are guides, porters and chefs, the rest are hikers. Therefore we will recommend you to book your trip as soon as possible (6 months in advance).
The adventure begins at your hotel in Cusco at 5.00 am, where you will be picked up by a bus that will transport you to the village of Calca, a trip that takes 45 min, where we will take a short break. From there we continue by bus for 2 hours to the starting point of our hike at the Lares hot springs. At the hot springs it’s possible to take a swim in the hot natural pools and while we relax we will also enjoy a nice lunch before our first hike begins. The hike will take 4 hours going uphill to the first camp of Huaqahuasi where we will set up our camp and enjoy a nice dinner together.
Early in the morning the guides will wake you up with a cup of wake-up-tea and breakfast. The first hike of the day will bring us up to the mountain top of Abra Huaqahuasi (4300 m), where we will get a get a great view over the valley and the mountain range. From the top of the mountain we have 1-hour-hike down to Auroruy Cocha, where we will eat a delicious lunch. Thereafter we should have a lot of energy for our next hike for 4 hours downhill to the camp of the night: Yanahuara, where a nice dinner awaits us.
At our camp at Yanahuara, we get up early for breakfast and wake-up-tea. At 6.30 we will be ready to descend for 40 min. to the local road, where a car will transfer us to Ollantaytambo for lunch (the ride takes 30 min.). The rest of the day you have free time to explore the city. It is optional to visit the Archaeological site of Ollantaytambo (entrance tickets are not include in the itinerary). In the night we will have dinner and get settled for the night in our hotel.
After a solid breakfast in Ollantaytambo, we will be transferred up to the starting point of our next trek “km 82” by bus. From there we begin hiking to Wayllabamba for 5 hours. The first and the last part of the hike is flat, the rest will be uphill. In Wayllabamba we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch. The rest of the day we relax, eat dinner and if we can find enough wood we can make a bonfire.
After breakfast we ascend for 1.5 hours until we reach the village of Yuncachimpa, where we will relax a bit. Thereafter we have another 1.5 hours hike uphill to the village of Llulluchapampa (last place to buy water and items before Machu Picchu). From there we will hike uphill to “Dead Woman Pass” (Warni Wanuska, 4250 m), where you can experience the living mountain of the dead woman, guarding the mountain pass. Thereafter we descend for 2 hours to the village of Paccaymayu, where we will spend the rest of the day, with lunch, dinner and camp.
On this day we only need to do one day of hiking more, before we arrive to the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu, and we will pass a lot of important archaeological sites. After our morning rituals and breakfast we ascend for 1 hour to the archaeological site of Runkuraqhay (3800 m), where our guide will give us a tour through the site. From the site we have another 1 hour hike up to Runku Pass (4000 m), which is the top of the mountain, where we will rest and get some oxygen from the fresh mountain air. Thereafter we descend for 1 hour to the archaeological site of Sayacmarka for a guided tour from our guide, so we can get an insight in the culture of the Incas. From there we will hike downhill for 30 min. to Chakiccocha for lunch. After lunch we descend for 1.5 hours to another archaeological site (Phuyupatamarka). Our last hike of the day takes 3 hours downhill to the last camp of our journey; the archaeological site of Wiñahuayna. Here we’ll set up our camp and have an enjoyable dinner together.
On the last day we get up very early 3.30 and eat breakfast at 4.00. After the breakfast we begin hiking to the first checkpoint which opens at 5.30. After the checkpoint we have one hour of hiking to the Sun gate, from where we will have great views and take fantastic photos of Machu Picchu and all the surrounding mountains. Thereafter we have 10 min. of hiking down to the lost city of the Incas; Machu Picchu. Here the Inca trail ends and we will enter the wonder of Machu Picchu. At the city of Machu Picchu the guide will show you around the city and its different important sites, ruins and temples for about 2 hours. After the tour you will have some free time to explore the city, its many different areas and its beautiful surroundings. It is optional to take a hike to Huaynapicchu (extra cost 65 $), where you can get an extraordinary view from the mountain top over Machu Picchu and its beautiful surroundings. After you have enjoyed the magnificent Machu Picchu a bus will take you down to Aguas Calientes, and then you’ll take the train back to Ollantaytambo. The “Expedition train” leaves at 6:35 in the evening and arrives at Ollantaytambo after 2 hours. At Ollantaytambo there will be a bus waiting for you to take you back to the Plaza de Amras in Cusco. Here your journey will end at 10:30 in the night.
